Chicago Audio Experience - Mister Kelly's Chicago

On this episode of the Chicago Jazz Audio Experience, David Marienthal, the son of one of the founders of Mister Kelly's and the London House, talks with Mike Jeffers about the upcoming benefit concert at City Winery in Chicago on July 29th. 

 

The show entitled "The Women of Mister Kelly's" pays tribute to some of the incredible talent that performed at the legendary club from 1953-1976 featuring performances by Anne Burnell, Frieda Lee, Holly McGuire, LaShera Moore, Suzanne Petri, Margaret Murphy-Webb, Michele Thomas, The Queen of Chicago Cabaret, Denise Tomasello, and London House legend, Judy Roberts, directed by Mark Burnell and hosted by Daryl Nitz.

David talks about the history of the club, the upcoming feature film, "Mister Kelly's Chicago", how instrumental the club was to launching careers and much more.

All of the proceeds from the evening will benefit the upcoming documentary film, Mister Kelly’s Chicago, produced by David Marienthal and Happy Medium Ventures.

Bassist Tatsu Aoki talks with Mike Jeffers about the upcoming project that he along with his MIYUMI PROJECT, Nicole Mitchell and filmmaker Jonathan Woods will be presenting on June 29th at the Logan Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Jazz Insitute of Chicago's Birthday BASH! The project name is UNDU and it creates a multi-dimensional experience through live performance by the MIYUMI Project interacting with Nicole Mitchell who appears through the mediums of video and pre-recorded sound.

Mike Reed Talks about his New Book "The City Was Yellow: Jazz & Improvised Music 1980-2010"

On this episode of the Chicago Jazz Audio Experience Podcast, Mike Jeffers talks with musician, curator, producer and now author Mike Reed about his new book called The City Was Yellow: Jazz & Improvised Music 1980-2010. The book will be launched on June 29th during a panel discussion at the Logan Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago's Birthday Bash.

 

About the Book

A release event for the “real book” anthology compiled by drummer, composer, and presenter Mike Reed. Containing fifty transcribed compositions, newly contributed bios, and insightful candid photography, the collection is “a soundtrack for a city that was yellow, illuminated by the hue of high-pressure sodium street lamps.”

In cooperation with the Jazz Institute of Chicago, all proceeds from the sale of the new book will benefit the ongoing educational programs of the Institute. To celebrate, Reed and colleagues play music and video to discuss compositions in (and not in) the book, as well as music made in (and about) Chicago.
