Vocalist Alyssa Allgood | March 2020 Feature Interview

Growing up in the Chicagoland area Alyssa Allgood was inspired to be a vocalist at a young age. She attended the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp at a very early age and continued to study all the way through college at North Central College.

 

Now an accomplished vocalist and educator, Alyssa talks about her concepts on teaching, practicing and what she has coming up in 2020.

Redd Holt...In His Own Words Chicago Jazz Magazine's Feature Interview

Legendary drummer Redd Holt talks about his life in music including how he got his start on the drums, his years of recording and touring with Ramsey Lewis, the inspiration of his new recording and much more.

Holt first started playing drums as a teenager and first met his collaborators Ramsey Lewis and Eldee Young while still in school in Chicago. Upon returning from military duty he re- connected with Lewis and Young to form the Ramsey Lewis Trio which produced the world wide hit, The "In" Crowd.

In 1966 Young and Holt split with Lewis and formed their own group, Young-Holt Unlimited, which went on to achieve commercial success as an instrumental soul band. After the group's dissolution in 1974 Holt continued on as Redd Holt Unlimited, playing under this name into the 1990s, and worked in jazz education in Illinois.

He founded the Gumption Artist Workshop, which was active from 1980 to 1985, and played internationally, including at the 1988 Montreux Jazz Festival and in Singapore in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Bosman Twins Preview their Performance at Winter's Jazz Club

The Bosman Twins are coming to Winter's Jazz Club for a special Chicago performance on December 26th and they took a few minutes to talk with the founder of Chicago Jazz Magazine, Mike Jeffers, about the upcoming performance and what people can expect to hear that evening.

For identical twins Dwayne and Dwight Bosman, born and raised in St. Louis, jazz has always been a Bosman family affair. At age ten, they began studying music with their father, Lloyd Smith, lead alto saxophonist and flautist with Earl “Fatha” Hines’ Orchestra and occasional sideman with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, who counted John Coltrane among his other students. By age fourteen, Dwayne and Dwight were performing as The Bosman Twins and they have been ever since.
